Changed out the tail light, who ever said it was direct bolt in LIED!!
Bolts were wider and higher on the new tailight, had to make some custom brackets.. Forgot to take pics
Not sure if anyone of said it was a "direct replacement". I recall everyone saying it required new holes or was not too difficult to install.

Looks good.

Thanks Addy, ya Coda said his was a direct bolt on. Did you have to do any fab for the one you did?

Here is mine. Direct bolt on though I bent the bracket in a little so the bottom of the unit would rest on the frame and be straight rather than drooping down.

Work Day at the West Seattle Bike Cave

Sunny, warm day. Perfect for some good wrenching.

PHENIX: Checked valves. Been 10 months and 2500 miles since he came to life. Intake 0.05. Exhaust 0.08. We loosened the exhaust one size to be more in line with the gsTwins suggestions. Changed oil. The amsoil looked a little odd. Cloudy. The valve cover breather had some whitish foam in it and some white sludge. not sure what that is. Maybe some interaction of a little stock oil in the engine when the amsoil was put in?

Olly's Ninja 250: He came back late and have Nina a good washing. Being a noob, he almost ran out of gas. He asked for a lesson on how to properly fill a tank so that will happen. Gave him the spare bottle of 0.5L gas to carry in his backpack until he gets the jist of how far he can go. Ninja's have a fuel gauge, not a main and reserve. Not really sure which I prefer.

SMUDGY (bluesmudge's bike): Took off old HUGE rear tire and put on the Pirelli Sport Demon with the gray rim to match the front. The Sport Demons were donated to the cave by Grommett2k. Now BlueSmudge has them. His black wheels are now in the cave, to be used when someone needs rims for new tires. That's how the Cave works. Parts come and go and get swapped around and we all have fun and a beer or two.

THEN we saw how shredded the aluminum rear sprocket was. 45 teeth too. So we put on a nearly new 39t sprocket with the tire. Then we saw the chain was too long due to the 45t sprocket so we put on a new chain. Then to check the front sprocket we had to remove the Busa shifter lever thingy and it had a broken bolt sooo.... things kept going. Drilling it out and putting in a new bolt. Then a screw on the sprocket cover was broken so we replaced the sprocket cover and did a quick clutch adjustment.

Funny how changing tires escalated into sprocket, chain, shifter lever and sprocket cover.

The cool thing about it is being a parts whore, we probably are better stocked on GS500 parts than a dealer.

Blue said Smudgy rides much better with the rear tire now the correct size. The old HUGE rear tire raised the rear too much and affected the mechanics of the ride.

Picture time!

Cloudy/milky oil typically means water/condensation.  In water cooled engines check head gasket.

In air cooled engines, this sometimes happens in Winter with snow slush and changes in temperature from condensation.

A little cloudy, OK.  A lot cloudy...problem.

looking on google map and found they had taken a photo of my house when I had just got my bike out of the garage ready to go to work.

Thats pretty cool! I was sitting in the driveway at work one day when the Googlemaps guy drove by, haven't seen it show up in the maps though..

Got a sheeeeeet load of parts in today. NOS 1973 TS-185 headlight. Boxes of GS500parts. It included most of the parts for an :E:model fairing.

Boy - did I learn something. This fairing, which I thought was an older TCP fairing is actually NEWER! It is for a 2001 naked bike in Europe. Color is interesting: YM7 which is "Suzuki YM7 Metallic Abyss Blue" used on the GS500 and Intruder. I have not seen it before.

As for Phenix: Water makes sense. Lots of nights with tons of condensation. I guess with only short rides, there isn't enough time for condensation to completely boil out of the oil. The foamy stuff in the breather cap was only there. Inside of head was spotless. I changed oil anyway, just to be safe.

slipperymongoose

Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Maybe Jester is vegetarian or worse......vegan!

Janx101

sausages?... plural?.... what sort of talent you think he has?!.... i just took it as 'the spuds' (potatoes/yams) ... and riding position does mean they get drenched with fuel if it happens.. but not always the 'john thomas' .. back in the day when i was riding dirtbikes and someone forgot to put their fuel cap breather hose over into the triple somewhere .. bumpy dirt tracks and jumps... fuel hose flips itself down beside your leg.. fuel splashes out... NITRO CROTCH!!!! was what we called it

Took the GS "Smudgy" for a ride to enjoy the new tire and gear ratio after the day in the bike cave. Sunny day in Seattle = gotta ride! Took the 35mm camera with me.

Tightened the bolts of fuel tank... Some friggin rubbing parts were making a weird vrooming sound for a month now. Was thinking of going to a machanic, and he definitely would've rogered my wallet, but all's chill now. Thanks to a tip from the manual ' go for the simple troubleshooting point first' . Anyhoo, the sound went away and I'm now smoking malboros  8) with a sense of accomplishment  :D

Brand new, red, NOS, TCP "E" fairing arrived today. Surprised: no customs with FedEx. I remember the hassles of S brake limes coming by FedEx.

I have 3 different "E" fairings: 2 by TCP and one by FiveStars. I'll do a write-up on the two styles of TCP fairings and what parts are interchangeable and which ones are not.

Pix shows new red one and new one of other style by TCP

I always have a stock of LEDs, as an FYI.

I was going to place an order with Lights4All for some smoke turn signals and tail lights, too. Next time we should post it so we can combine orders and save on international shipping. Kind of a trade mark of mine is I always put on smoke turn signals and tail lights from them. They have quality parts. That have to be good: they have to be certified for street use in Germany, unlike the Chinese parts on ebay.

AND...... parts whore got in a whole 'nuther box-o-parts in addition to the fairing.
