Obviously you/they pick the wrong dang weekends Pete... next time the mob decides on 'that' day... shout them down and pick the other one!

peteGS

Yes pic's!!! Pic's and pic's!!! Hahaha

If only I got to choose the weekend! The weekend before was perfect weather...

Unfortunately the trip is an overnighter for the other guys so accomodation is booked in advance so if it rains, well it rains... haha

Of course it's better dry but it was still a good day out... the only issue was the moron on the Ducati on Kyogle Rd on the way home who can't turn corners... kept pulling his elbows in to check his mirrors and yep I'm here... still... yep still here... yep still here... what can't you see I'm up your ring every time you brake into and through every single corner?? Of course he cracked the throttle in every straight so I couldn't get past where it was safe to do so...

Some track time with a decent instructor would help cure that... ah, never mind the track-time. Just some good conversation (um, advice) at the end of the ride can go a long way to make riders aware of their poor style and/or weak habits.

Heh... One of my Son's Sportster buddies thinks is normal to wreck every couple of seasons.
You know the type... the guy with the obnoxiously loud, but painfully slow bike.  :icon_rolleyes:

I remember after my first run up to Thredbo on the Snowy Mountain Ride I had a chat with an instructor for the Upright course who was travelling with us. The tips he gave helped immensely, especially when I came in WAY too hot into a 35kph corner at around 100 (no sign).

In other news, physio said I should be right to ride next week. So that'll be fun!

EJ .. check out 'the best GS eBay description'  thread..  project bike for you!
Lads..  it's worthy of the LPW crew's attention eh! :thumb:

Janx101

Malf... you push the bars and lean and trail brake and ease on the throttle? ..  or how?

peteGS

I'm sure the Duc rider looked twice when I finally managed to get around him... I don't think he expected to have a 33 year old little Suzuki sitting on his tail... I really wanted to tell him... I'm not that fast, you're just that slow...  :cookoo:

Malf that's great news!

And that eBay description, that there is pure gold!

Pushed bars, leaned the bike over, and kept the power smooth through 5th gear, hit the apex of the corner and powered through. I grazed the exhaust and foot peg, but came the other side upright. Found the closest safe spot to pull over for a smoke and to let the adrenaline settle down.

The guys behind me said it looked like something from MotoGP. I never, ever, EVER want to do it again. It was exhilarating, but so f%$king terrifying I was almost convinced I was dead going in.

I think someone got it on their GoPro. I'll see if I can track the footage down.

The best (worst?) part was the response we got from the local council when I sent them a letter about what happened, and that the sign was missing for the bend. I got a phone call and the bloke was more or less like "when someone dies, we might get funding for a new sign". A new sign was up last year. I really hope it didn't take someones life to get it put in.

Janx101

Lol. .. so Malf. .  Just how hard was you arse vacuumed to the seat?! Lol. ...
...  goes to show though, most of us NEVER reach the riding/handling  potential of our bikes! .. the machine will do more!

Malfruen

Pretty sure I sucked most of the saddle into my colon. There was ALOT of clenching involved.

Janx101

Bahahaha. .

Closest I can come to that on road.... riding early last year... twilight run up mountain twisters... first run in several weeks, mate riding behind me....
Not too quick into the corner.... but got distracted and nearly went straight ahead over corner!, last second was deep countersteer left with a short throttle feed to try bring the Ass around...

The distraction?  ... something small with many legs crawling out of top helmet padding/vent and across my bald scalp!!... thinking "fucken SPIDER!!" .. was a little German cockroach!  ... who was politely evicted during the stop immediately after recovering the corner!

Mate near wet himself with laughter!.... I nearly went looking for a nice soft leaf to clear my undies with!

Counter steer is an amazing effect when used properly!

Malfruen

It sure is.

One of the other things we learnt on our first 5 day outing was to pick your own lines. Don't follow the leader directly, so to speak. Make your own way through, cause if old mate up ahead isn't paying attention, and comes off, guess whose next?

Case in point, my younger brother, who was riding ahead of me during one section of the ride, decided that the nice, smooth, grippy, black and inviting road was too boring, and went offroad coming out of a corner, off and down into the table drain. He probably could have pulled it back in, but I think he was just getting to the point where he thought "This'll be good for a laugh." An amusing sight to see is a bright orange '97 BMW F650 cruising up the table drains. He didn't fall off, he just shrugged, checked to see if anyone else was doing it, and when he realized he was the only one playing offroad, he pulled it back onto the black stuff. Had I been following his line, I'd have followed him.

I don't think I would have stayed on, that shaZam! looked rough as hell.

peteGS

Nice recoveries guys! Haha

I've had a few where I know I'm running wide and it's all you can do to force those bars down and down and down... I'm so glad my bike is more capable than I am!!!!

There is one particular corner on a little side road we take regularly that comes back in on itself... it's a right hander with a bit of armco and a very steep long drop to the left.

It took me about 4 runs up there before I didn't feel like I was going to go sailing over the edge... then I followed another guy up there on his first ride up that road... watched him going in and thought to myself... he's doing what I used to do! I backed right off and watched him do exactly what I used to do and just be able to pull it back in on time...

Even though I knew what was happening I still found it difficult to pull my focus from his line and take my own line through...

PS: I think I have a solution to my stacks and sock filters... be a few weeks by the sounds but I think I'm sorted!

Down-hill runs suck. They suck the courage right out of me.
Conversely, going up-hill through the twistys is so very much easier. Corrections are a snap on the the up-hill runs.
Hey, you guys are moto experts... Why is it that way?

 ... I like down hill runs MUCH better! ... and if its downhill at night then I'm ecstatic!

peteGS

I ride with guys who love down hill... I used to be freaked out by down hill and if it's an unfamiliar road at speed then I'm still a bit more cautious than I probably need to be, whereas yes uphill I find so much less daunting. After riding so much with guys that love down hill I started to get a bit more comfortable with it.

I think it's because you feel like you're relying so much more on the front tyre going down hill, and that's where my confidence has always been a bit lacking, dunno why but it just is...

Incidentally I ordered the velocity stacks yesterday and Unifilter are releasing rally pods that will fit over the top in a few weeks, so I should be all set some time in April to get rid of these bloody awful pods  :thumb:

PS Janx, I believe you're full of shaZam!  :whisper:

I may be full of shaZam! Pete! .. but I can always string together smoother lines on a downhill!  (Shrug) .. uphill I tend to miss apexes and exit bad ish.   Each to their own I guess!?

Hey Pete...
Tread lightly here. He like the steep stuff.
It's a truck driver thing.
