I guess today was my time. Luckily I had all of my gear on and only have a swollen knee (X-rays showed no breaks) The bike has some cosmetic damage and bent handlebars. My side cover on the right will need to be replaced. Anybody know where I could buy one used?

Big Rich

Yikes. Glad to hear you're relatively ok.

Unless somebody here has one, ebay is a good bet for that cover plate. And you can fit one from an earlier GS too (GS450 for certain, but maybe even from a 400 or 425). Only difference is the hole in the center of the cover - the early models are solid.

Yes, glad to know you are okay!!!

I replaced that cover on my gs a couple years ago along with the metal Suzuki sticker thing... I think I bought them both from motosport.com (I was ordering quite a bit from them at the time) but I would totally do as Rich said and check eBay first.

check ebay. let me know if you find an extra one.

Otherwise, Chuck81 still has some of the custom covers I believe.

Ice and rest that knee.

Went down in The City?

Erika

I'll take a look at eBay. I was wondering about that hole, with only a thin plate glued on to cover it. Is there a purpose for the hole?

I went down in Brooklyn, it's a gamble to ride here. There was road construction(a bulldozer) blocking the view at a pedestrian cross walk. I had a green light, but a jogger didn't notice the don't walk sign and I hit her as she stepped in front of me. I was more upset about her than about the slide I had, just terrible. They shouldn't be allowed to leave big equipment unattended on street corners without a flag guy :(

Erika

Also, my bikini fairing is toast, which is a bummer because it's original and not after market. Bleh, this year better improve.

Sorry to hear about the crash. Going down on public roads can be an emotional experience. I know how those few seconds can replay over and over again in your mind. At least we can usually learn something and change our riding habits.

Playing armchair quarterback, it sounds like you went through the intersection too fast. What if that jogger was a truck running a red light?

I'm curious about who is at fault in such a situation. Sounds like the jogger was in the wrong, but I think local laws differ on pedestrian right-of-way. Were police or paramedics called? Was the jogger issued a citation?

You might want to hold off on posting anything on the internet until you are sure how the the situation is going to play out legally.

Big Rich

Erika, how bad is the fairing? I dunno if the OEM fairing is fiberglass or plastic, but both can be fixed with a little bit of work. Could be a good winter / rainy day project.

Glad to hear the knee is well, be sure to PRICE(protect, rest, ice, compress, and elevate)! Knock that inflammation out and it'll heal up quicker.

Fairing's are plastic, and bigrich is right they can be repaired or replaced. Don't let the accident sink in too deep and keep you from saddling up. Major things are learned in moments like these, and it seems like you're on the right track(getting checked at the Dr, figuring out what obstacles aided the spill, and possible steps to take next time a similar lo visibility situation arises).

Definitely glad you're well, how did the impatient jogger fair?

ShowBizWolf

Yeah good call Rich!! I'm curious how bad the fairing is as well.

There indeed is a time where yeah something is kinda beyond saving but hopefully you can fix it!
Ever since I started working with fiberglass I've fixed all kinds of things.

I think I will try and fix the fairing. It's scraped deeply and is cracked at the bolt points, and the windshield is split into 2 pieces, but it's a clean split. Someone around here must work on fiberglass and plastic. The bracket is also bent, but maybe I can bend it back.

As for the jogger, I won't say too much more about her, but can descibe the recipe for disaster. The main issue was large construction equipment parked on a narrow street corner unattended. I had a green light and slowed just under 25mph (thank goodness the speed limit is 25mph) because I couldn't see what was at the pedestrian cross walk. Impatient drivers were riding my tail so I felt boxed in. The jogger didn't see around the equipment or she might have noticed the traffic and I would've seen her booking towards the street and honked at her, and the drivers behind me may also have seen her and stopped riding my tail.

I have to disagree, the only reason why I played my "worst" accident ive had on my motorcycle over and over in my head was because of the stupid "reckless driving" ticket I got... because of someone else's RECKLESS DRIVING. [that left the FKIN SCENE! I WAS the one punished for it!] I did learn some things that day... as long as nothing is sticking out from my skin or I feeling faint. DO NOT GO TO THE HOSPITAL. Because that hospital ride [legit being under 4 miles.. ffs] plus the state will impound your freaking motorcycle and you have to fight to get it back! my first accident wasn't easy... wasn't the "falling down" part that was hard tho..

Glad you're ok! I hear New York City (area) traffic can be extremely dangerous; this just proves it!

Hope the idiot jogger got a reality-check!

just fyi, you can ride without the side fairing, both L + R. it's just that they'll be more expose to the elements. but it looks decent without the side fairings.

That sucks J_Walker. I guess the cops were nicer to me, they parked my bike in a legal spot at the side of the road told me where it was as they took me for X-rays. I was also lucky that witnesses went out of their way to protect me and stay with me because they saw what happened. Also, the jogger admitted she goofed. I'm sure once I get the bill I'll be sobbing.

Pedestrians in NYC do not pay attention to crossing lights.

They pay even less attention to them while "jogging" (which involves watching their feet with earbuds in for some reason).

When they do wait for traffic, they do so 3-5 feet off of the curb (i.e.: in the street).

Adding complications like construction/equipment...(ugh).

Glad to hear you're ok. Rest. Remain vigilant. Magic sometimes happens in FleaBay ;-).

Maybe the trustees of the West Seattle Bike Cave might have or know the whereabouts of an OEM bikini?

I think I may have the part you are looking for. I got it from a member here:

Since the photo was taken I peeled off the pasti-dip to see what it would take to get it to be glossy black. It has a couple chips and cracks but it is pretty easily repairable if you know your way around some bondo and a rattle can. It is glossy red now.

I'm not totally enamored with it on my bike. I wanted it to help with airflow at highway speeds, but it isn't really all that much help there in reality and I'm not sure it works for me looks-wise.

If you come up dry on eBay between now and spring let me know if you want it and we can work out a deal.

I'd keep it and fix it but if you really want it I would rather see it on your bike and make you feel whole than have it sit on my workbench. It is likely to be an unfinished possible project I have no real motivation to see completed.
