My GS is dead - Long live the GS

OK That was too dramatic... but I think the motor is dead... OK the light uneven ride I mentioned a few weeks ago, preceeded by clunking and general noise at startp... and the recent 50 mile ride and battery dead the next day... and the dark greyish paste I found in the oil filter... all added up to one thing... I had goat's motor problem. Shall we call it "goats syndrome" from now on. Anyway... 2 of the magnets glued to the rotor were awol... found one in 100,000 pieces at the bottom of the alternator cover, and the other one nearly intact on the stator coil. Then the pan came off, revealing a remarkably clean pan, with very few bits and a lot less black deposit that I thought. So now the question is this... what does that metal do... From the pan it has to go through the meshy filter and then the oil filter to get to anyhting... and the pastey crap I saw was stopped by the filter... so does that mean my motor was safe from this. Also the magnet is rather soft and weak ... rather brittle... breaking easily... is it hard enough to do much damage. I am not building a bottom end and a top end, cos my motor has 45K hard miles on it, and I have a spare motor sitting around wating its turn... so... now what do I do... Anyone... goat...

Even if the filter stopped the pasty stuff the question might be did the pasty stuff clog the filter and starve the moter of oil.

I now have a "bike sickness" named after me. It sounds contagous, too. I don't know whether I should be proud, scared or ashamed :lol:  :lol:

that sounds exactly like what I found. Most of the magnet pieces were in the alternator. There was also a bunch of crap in the sump and the oil strainer (wire mesh near oil filter).
I think that there is another opening on the left side of the crankcase where oil can pass through. I found a few really small magnet pieces on the crank and the transmission shafts, but not enough to make me worried once they were cleaned off. However, I thought I could see some magnet pieces embedded in the main bearings, and since I only have a little over 6k on my motor, I just replaced them.

If I had a spare motor, I would have replaced it instead of rebuilding. It was a good learning experience, but much more time consuming than simply replacing the motor.

I doubt it... cos the oil was watery thin 10W40... I run 20W50 or thicker... just the once I used 10W40... also the bypass will kick in and let oil get to the motor... But you never know... I thing the clitch is the weak link... its got the softest material in the motor.

pardon my ignorance here, but could the bypass allow some of that goop into critical engine areas? :o  :dunno:

If the engine has 45K miles on it and the oilpan seems clean (the plug is made of metal so it should attract the pieces right?) I would just put the oilpan back, put new oil + filter in and ride again. If you don't hear any weird noises then it will probably be ok. If performance isn't as good as before or after 100 miles the engine wants to freeze up you mount another engine.

The pan was clean, so was the filter screen... amd that fitting it all back and see how it runs did cross my mind. I belive I have 99% of the magnet safely in a bin right now. The oil filter goop actually was sort of grease like, not really paste like, The question is... do I open it any further or do I close it back and see what happens. Also I have to see if the filter screen material is steel or not. Also Goat... why did you remove your clutch. I dont want to on mine... also what bearings were bad, and how was your oil pan when you opened it... How much metal was in there??

You found most of the magnet. Change the oil & filter and run it. You can't do much, without disassembling, about the oil galleys being or getting clogged.

Don't forget to replace the magnets.

Oh BTW I had a oil change just a few mins of idling before... All I did after changing oil was idle it for 5 mins.... so I should checn the old filter and the new filter...

I had a bunch of crap in the bottom of the sump pan, but most of it was pieces of whatever covers the magnets (a yellow, plastic looking material) I think I have a picture of it. I will post it when I get home if I do.

OK that might have been in the oil I drained over the weekend. And some of it might be in the motor in various locations. That wont affect the thing... something like that small enough to enter via the sump filter, wont hurt the motor. I have 99% of the magnet tight in the bototm of that alternator cover... I found 1 of those entirely intact... 1 piece... stuck to the rotor.

we are in the process of completely rebuilding mat's motor, it has around 69590 miles on it, or somthing like that close, but i know its at least 69k, but yeah, we took the heads off, did it smell like somthing had burnt goat?
cause his smells like someone stuck a peice of toast in an oven during the clean cycle  :?

Yea they smell like somehting was burnt in there... I think its called gasoline... and oil...  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:
Anyway... was his alternator magnet smashed too... and did you find any pieces in the bearings. And which bearings.

I just talked to a mechanic I know and trust well, and he seemed to think the oil and filter should be changed every 100-200 miles a few times... 2-3 times and it will live and probably not have any ill effects from this. Goat... where all did you find the bearings chewed up.
